Frequently Asked Questions
Glossary of Terms | The What's What of Curtains
A Pencil pleat heading is the most common heading for Curtains these days due to their flexibility. We add a wide gathering tape to the back of the curtains at the top. You can pull the strings in this tape and gather the curtain to the exact width you require. If you tie the excess strings carefully you can even untie and readjust the width in the future if you move etc. This kind of heading can be attached to either curtain rod and ring sets or curtain tracks. The gathering tape has 3 different hanging positions to suit all types of Tracks and Poles. You will need to add our Gather hooks to your order. Approx 1 hook per 10cms is recommended.
Pinch Pleat is a more formal decorative heading for your curtain, suitable for all types of Curtain poles or Tracks. Pinch Pleats are more gathered than other headings and have a permanent sewn in pleats for a more luxurious, tailored look. When using white or very light coloured fabrics its possible for the stitching around the pleats to show dark spots. This is the block out coating showing through the stitch holes and is unavoidable. We suggest a different heading style for white fabrics. You will need to order our adjustable sliding Smart hooks for ease of use. Smart hooks can be visible through some Sheer curtains so you may consider our Pin in hooks for these. They are cheaper but require more effort to attach to the back of the pleat. Approx 1 hook per 10cms will be required.
Tab Top Curtains:
A loop of straight fabric hangs the curtain on to a curtain pole, the easiest of all curtains to hang and operate, it also offers a very easy operation as the loops of fabric just slide along the pole. This style is a contemporary, straighter style is easily hung on a Curtain Pole or Rod. Note: Tab Tops are not suitable for curtain tracks or bay windows (without a special pole).
This style is know by both terms and is fast becoming the most popular style right now as it offers a very modern finish and like Tab Top curtains, are very easy to hang. Metal rings are punched thought the fabric at the top folding the curtain into large even pleats which are then fed onto the curtain pole or rod. Normally this style will have less material so you have less folds for a more contemporary finished look. Note: Eyelets are not suitable for curtain tracks or bay windows (without a special pole). Eyelets will not travel past the brackets so are not suitable for very wide windows.
Voile or Sheer curtains made from a very light sheer or see through fabric that is now made from polyester. These can be used like net curtains for day time privacy. Our Ready Made Voiles or Sheer curtains are available in a few styles of heading, one is the gathered style where you feed the Sheer curtain onto an existing curtain rod or attach gather hooks for use on a track or rod and ring set. More recently, they are available in Eyelet versions and hung from rods or poles. Custom Made Sheer curtains can be ordered with Pencil, Pinch and Box Pleats. Sheer curtains will not provide nightime privacy when your lights are on.

Q: Do my curtains come with all fittings to install my curtains?
A: All Curtains on the Net curtains come with the adjustable curtain tape at the top sewn in to allow for small adjustments if required. The only thing that we don't supply you with is the curtain track as most people already have these if they are looking for curtains. We will be adding curtain tracks to the website shortly. If you don't have curtain tracks or Poles go to your local hardware store, just let them know what style you want and 9 times out of ten they will have a great selection to choose from.
Q: What is the best curtain to reduce noise?
A: Go for a Block Out curtain as it will do the best job. It will be better at Block Out out the noise than a translucent version. The Block Out version is also excellent at keeping out the light and heat. If you don't have noise or heat issues and still want light to filter through your fabric then we suggest choosing a translucent fabric.
Q: What is your warranty and how do you compare to other top name brands?
A: The quality of the Curtains on the Net curtains is comparable to all the top name brands. We are very selective with the products we put our name to and we set our selves a very high standard. This means that you get the best possible product at the best possible price. In addition, the guarantee and warranty we provide exceeds those offered by most name brands. We cover all of our product for 12 months but to this day have still never had a claim!
Q: How Block Out are your Block Out fabrics?
A: Anything that is called "Block Out" on our website is 100% Block Out. This means that no sun will pass through the fabric. As most curtains are face mounted, you normally will not have any light gaps unless the track is mounted too low. For this reason, Curtains are excellent at keeping out the light and also the heat.
Q: How secure is your credit card online payment facility?
A: Our website uses a company called Paystream to do all of our transactions and this site is 100% secure and trusted. We never keep any credit card details as this is a security risk. If you do not feel comfortable using the credit card Paystream option, then we also accept Cheques or Direct deposits. Just click on the "Direct Deposit" button rather than the Credit card button at the payment stage. Just don't forget to let us know you are putting money into the account by faxing us a copy of the receipt with a copy of your order to 02 8726 1901
Q: Do you keep my credit card details?
A: In the interest of keeping your records safe, we keep no record of your credit card details.
Q: How long will it take to get my curtains?
A: For all ready made curtains, delivery usually takes no longer than 5 working days, for all Custom made express curtains, production takes about 10-14 working days and then please allow a few days shipping. Our factory is based in Victoria so for customers living in Victoria, the travelling time will be far less so you will get faster delivery than our customers in other states. Sydney Metro area is usually on a next day basis but this is not a guaranteed service so I would suggest leaving 2 days.
Q: Is it possible to change my order after I confirm the order?
A: Yes it is, so long as we have not started making the order, anything is possible! We will endeavour to do our best, however if the job is already cut and in production, it is hard to make your curtains bigger, we are however able to trim most curtains down for a small charge.
Q: If I don't want to pay via credit card, what other payment methods do you offer?
A: We try to make payment as easy and safe as possible for you. We obviously have our safe and secure Paystream website to deal with credit card payments, but for those who don't have a credit card or feel a little wary of using them inline, we also have direct deposit services available. You can also post us a cheque and as soon as the funds are cleared, we will process your order. Cheque and Direct deposit may add a day or 2 onto the delivery time as we have to wait for funds to clear into our account before we can put your curtains into production.
Q: What if my curtains arrive damaged?
A: All curtains that arrived damaged must be signed for as damaged and of course we will make sure they get replaced. We may require these curtains to be returned so please keep them safe.
Q:How are my curtains delivered and what if im not home?
A: All our curtains are delivered via courier and it is always best to use a work address or an address where you will know that someone will be there to sign for the goods. If you are not at home for the delivery, our courier will usually leave a note asking you to call them to arrange a convenient time to redeliver. However we don't like curtains going back and forth as this adds time to the delivery and increases the risk of damage.
Q: How do I measure my windows and what if I measure then incorrectly?
A: Curtains on the Net offers a measuring guide for your convenience and we are always available to call if you have any questions. Call us on 1300 852 912 and we may be able to offer a solution to your problem. If we can't, Curtains on the Net will remake you curtain at a greatly reduced rate. We do not what to profit from your misfortune.
Q: What are your opening hours?
A: We are open 24 hours a day online for receiving curtains orders and sample orders but are only available 9am - 5pm Monday – Friday for customer service via telephone and email. We do however check emails on most weekends so you can sometimes get an email reply over the weekend!
Q: Can we get samples of the fabrics as Im not sure how accurate the colours are on your website?
A: Yes, we offer a FREE sample service, just click on the product you are interested in (i.e. Broome Pinch Pleat curtains) then click on the order sample button. We strongly recommend you do this as everyone's monitors are different and colours can vary from their appearance on your screen.
Q: Are you able to come and do a measure and quote?
A: At Curtains on the Net, we concentrate our efforts on making it as easy as possible for you to measure and quote yourself. As this allows us to keep our margins low so you benefit from these saving! If you need any help when online, then please just give us a call as we can walk you through every step of the way.
Q: What is your refund and returns policy?
A: Please click here to see our Delivery and Terms policy.
Q: Why are your ready made curtains cheaper than your made to order curtains?
A: Our ready made curtains are exactly that, ready made and mass produced so that this allows the prices to be kept low. Our made to measure or custom made express curtains are manufactured by hand to your exact size requirement so this is a much more accurate and lengthy process and of course this has to be paid for somewhere. This is why we have a longer lead time for Made to Measure curtains but you also get a more tailored curtain to fit your exact window requirements, we can also make longer drop and wider widths in the Custom Made Express curtain range.
Q: Are your curtains 100% made to measure or are they cut down curtains?
A: At Curtains on the Net we hate the "cut down" philosophy. This is basically a Chinese ready made curtain that is a very low quality and is then chopped down to size. This means you don't get a consistent curtain at the end of the day and the quality level is far less. All our curtains are sold as either ready made curtains or 100% made to order, we strive for a higher quality level and this may mean we are not the cheapest on the market. We do however strive to keep our quality high so your curtains will last the test of time. All of our Custom made Express range is 100% Australian made.
Q: What do you mean by inside & outside mount?
A: This refers to the way in which the treatment will be hung, either inside or outside the window opening. Inside mounts are mounted inside the window opening that is recessed from the wall. Outside mounts hang outside the window opening either on the wood frame or above and beyond the wood frame. Outside mount or FACE mount is the most common way to hang curtains today and provides a nice, clean look. Outside mounts are great for doors or windows with a very shallow windowsill depth. An outside mount can also be used to make a window appear larger or to hide an unattractive window. For more information on this please click here to go to our MEASURING GUIDE section.
Q: What is the difference between Pinch Pleat Curtains and Pencil Pleat Curtains?
A: Basically Pinch Pleat curtains are a more tailored finish, giving you a more formal look at top of your curtains where as Pencil Pleat heading is a gathered heading allowing you to draw (expand or reduce) the width of the curtain to suit your window width. For more info on this and to see the difference between the the heading please click here.
Q: Do you provide hooks?
A: As your curtain tracks or poles are going to be different to other peoples, we leave getting the right hooks up to you, once again, try your local hardware as they will have a good selection. We are working on getting hooks loaded online, but we are just trying to find the best quality and the best prices.
Q: What are the curtains made from?
A: All of our curtains are made from various yarns, most of our curtains are made from 100% Polyester, although some have Viscous and Polyester compositions to get the ideal look. Have a look a a few of them to make your perfect selection.
Q: Can I see the fabrics?
A: Yes you can, just click on the style you are after (i.e. Pinch Pleat or Pencil pleat etc) then click on the actual product picture to take you through to the colour selection and ordering page. Here you will see a big button that looks like this: , click on this and fill out your detail and the colour samples you want to see.
Q: Why cant I order samples of some ready made products:
A: You will notice that on some of the Tab Top curtains, Pinch Pleat Curtains, Pencil Pleat Curtains and Eyelet Curtains do not have an order sample button, this is because the products are only available in one width or are so competitively priced and photographed so well that you don't really need samples to know that you love them!
Q: What happens if my order is damaged in delivery?:
A: Unfortunately from time to time accidents can happen and with freight companies, its sometimes unavoidable. We mainly use TNT for our freight as they have proved to be the best of a bad bunch. However, we highly recommend that you take out the option of Freight Insurance at the checkout. This is offered as an optional extra and covers any damage or loss to curtains whilst in transit and is only $2.50/$100 of Value. So if you spend $200, your curtains will be covered for an additional $5.00 Not bad for a little bit of extra piece of mind.
If for any reason your curtains are damaged, please ensure that you sign for them as damaged. Sometimes the boxes may be damaged and the curtains inside are perfect, so we always recommend signing for them as damaged if you have any concerns. We will also need to have some photos of the damaged goods sent to us via email to claim on the insurance. Unfortunately curtains that are not insured and get damaged or lost in transit cannot be returned or replaced.
In the checkout you will find a drop down box saying Yes ($) or No, please select Yes ($) to accept the freight insurance. By selecting the NO option, you have removed any right to claim for damages or loss of your goods with curtains on the Net. For this reason we strongly recommend taking out the insurance.
Q: What happens if my order is lost in delivery?:
A: The reality is that this can happen from time to time, curtains just vanish off the face of the earth never to be seen again. But, fear not, as long you have paid for the freight insurance, we will replace the ordered items after a reasonable period of time has been given for the freight company to try to locate the missing items, TNT will notify us if they have given up all hope of finding your goods, we can then arrange replacement curtains to be made asap.
